PLEASE take a few minutes to read this.. I have a story for you and I hope it hits home. I want to tell you a story about one of my clients, I am going to keep her name as “Jane” for confidentiality reasons.
Jane and I have been working out together for over two years and, like each one of my other clients, she has a special place in my heart. I can’t say enough about her hard work, perseverance and dedication. When she first came to me, she was 63 years old and recovering from an almost fatal blood disease called TTP. She was very weak and felt like she had lost a lot of ground in stamina and strength. To make a long story short, she traveled to Bhutan last September and climbed in the Himalayas; one day she traveled from 7,000 to 11,000 ft. in 2 hours.
Enough said about her physical transformation. This is a great story that no matter what, never GIVE UP. Be excited to FAIL, knowing that you CAN GET BACK UP.
Now onto the part that really inspired me to write this..
Over Christmas her and another client of mine gifted me a gift card to Roseda Beef, which is a local farm in Monkton that is known to have some of the best beef in town. Finally, yesterday (after 3 1/2 months of procrastinating) I made a spur of the moment decision to head up to the farm to get the beef. After I left, I had this sudden urge to call Jane, and thank her once again. Keep in mind, I very very very rarely call Jane (maybe once in the 27 months I have trained her). We normally communicate via text. I also made a dumb joke and made her laugh and she told me she would see me tomorrow (today). So, today she is warming up and tells me something extremely sad. She began to say that about an hour before I called her yesterday, she had to put down one of her dogs. Jane LOVES her dogs! She then proceeded to tell me that my voice was what she needed to hear and she was so happy that I called and she felt it was meant to happen or serendipitous. She knew that coming in today would make her FEEL BETTER. I think this was a sign from the man upstairs. Of all the days for me to go to the farm and I chose yesterday? Had I not gone, I would have never called her. What are the odds she answers her phone? She is in her 60’s…a cell phone to her is nothing like it is to a 27-year old.
I often get asked what it makes to be a great trainer. The first thing I always tell people is to focus on the RELATIONSHIPS. We are in a RELATIONSHIP business; sure the sets and reps count, but without the relationship the sets and reps may not even matter. I was inspired when I heard Monday night while listening to a talk at our weekly Bible Study that when most people are about to die, they wish they would have taken more time to focus on relationships with ones they care most about. We were challenged to take more time to focus on the relationships with the ones we care most about.
For me personally, it’s you all. I value the relationship with not only “Jane,” but with each and EVERY ONE OF YOU. I want to make sure I do my absolute best to keep watering the relationship plant with each one of you. I am challenging you to do the same with the ones you love. Have a great day!!!
